Basketball was created by James Naismith, a Canadian, while working in Springfield, Massachusetts. The first game took place in the United States, but 10 of the players of the first basketball game where from Quebec.

But if you want to be precise -
Basketball was invented in the United States.
and the first basketball games were played in the United States.
Technically, that makes basketball a US sport.

(it can't be a Canadian sport if it wasn't even played in Canada)

If you doubt me consider this: Robert Oppenheimer and Albert Einstein were from Germany - but that doesn't make the Atomic Bomb a German invention.

the funny thing is, here in the US you think of baseball, basketball, football as the top three sports. But ice skating is actually one of the top as well.

I would put football as #1 simply because we saw how powerful the sport was in the mid-90's when the NFC broadcasts went to Fox. It made pretty much every small and mid size market metro area have to carry a Fox affiliate. The NFL put Fox in everyone's home in America.

No other sports league can impact a tv network like the NFL can.

But that is more from a ratings standpoint. Then again, a lot more people watch a game on tv as opposed to going to one.

Marylands first championship since the late 1960s i think.

Soccer just isn't popular in America. Alot of sports arent.

No sport is that we suck at.

And as for the World, surprisingly, one fo the top "sports" leagues, is CHESS.

sry but chess, billiards and poker are not sports
they're games

it doesn't make them inferior - it just means we won't be seeing them in the olympics no matter how popular they are - which is a shame because I'm a big time pocket billards player/fan.

The only "sports" I follow are probably boxing and .... UFC!
Who doesn't love the UFC?

its true chess, poker, and billards are not sports. as there is no need for any real atheltictism(sp) needed. it takes more thought then anything to win those games. in atheltic events u have to be in shape and have some sort of stregnth (one could argue golf is not a sport cough john daly cough) it does take intelligence to win but it cant be called a sport. and its ture if we dont dominate the sport in the world we tend to say it isnt "popular". soccer is popular in america its just not one of the MOST POPULAR sport. that is reserved for baseball, basketball, football. hockey is prolly above soccer a bit as we are better at hockey in the world then we are at soccer. soccer is annually dominated by south america and europe. hockey is dominated more by european conturies.

Whatever floats your boat, I guess. Which sport is the most entertaining is up to the individual and bashing one sport coz you find it boring is kind of lame..

I love american football although I was brought up in a country where no one plays the sport and where everyone loves soccer. To be honest I like watching big games ie the World Cup but I think the majority of English Premier League players are spoilt brats.

This is one topic where (at least to me) it's clear that the rest of the world has their act together more than the US. Don't get me wrong, I love football, basketball, etc. (even baseball at times). Howerver, I think we're far too narrowminded. This is true of soccer, and especially volleyball. That's right.... volleyball. I don't know the numbers, but I think it's like one of the top 3 most popular sports in the world or something like that. It doesn't get the credit it deserves around here-- most likely because it only generates interest for the girls jumping in spandex (which I'm a huge fan of), instead of the men's version which is the in-your-face, powerful, aggressive way of playing that does the sport true justice.

Vent off.... but seriously... go men's volleyball!

Anywho, there are plenty of sports america doesn't dominate. It's just that alot of people over there think like good old Booger:

That sports don't exist if your not winning.

To name a few (I have not looked into who currently IS best at any of these but im sure most of them wont be america ):

Snooker (and therefore pool)
Cricket
Badminton
Table Tennis
Sqash
Polo
Darts
Beach Volleyball
Lacrosse
Rugby Union
Rugby League

etc etc etc...

Although I dont follow national football (international is ok), I realy fail to see how anyone can question that it is the most popular sport.

Golf however, is indeed very very boring to watch... I let it go though because its a great game to play.
just for the record, snooker does not equal pool

snooker is played on a pool table, but they are two different games

anyone who has watched a full match of this knows that it takes of lot of skill to play this SPORT, because basically if you miss, you know the other guy is gonna gain a huge lead on you

yes, volleyball is very popular, but the official governing body for the sport has a crediblity issue with their figures. 900 million? More then any other sport in the world? Cmon!

And lets not forget table tennis or auto racing, two other popular aports around the globe.

Why should you be loyal to any sports team where the players are not even loyal to the team only the highest bidder?

I'm sorry, but just because soccer and volleyball isn't as popular here that makes the US "narrowminded?"

You can't blame a country for having particular tastes - that doesn't make sense. If everyone in my family loves okra but I hate it - that doesn't mean I'm narrowminded. It just means I don't like okra.

NFL players are equally infamous for being money-minded; you just have to wait for the preseason when there are a flood of players threatening to hold out. The reason I made the comment about soccer players being spoilt brats is because they get handed fame and a pile of cash at a young age, and a lot of them don't have the maturity to deal with that in the proper way.

soccer players dont make near as much as football players. football players are making millions and millions soccer players dont make that much. freddy adu is a rare case since he started at age 15 he is phenomenal player but he is also the youngest ever. most players are around 20 before they are in the MLS or European Leagues. they arent handed fame they have to work hard to gain it(as do football players just so u football lovers dont whine). but no one knew who david beckham was when he was 15. freddy adu was being scouted at age 13. there are high school QBS who are being scouted as well so its the same thing. but NFL and NBA have the new draft rules where they have to be a certain age./ MLS doesnt, or if it did it made an exception for adu. also freddy adu is in college rite now through an accelerated program offered to him by the DC United. so he still has a chance to mature and then he can get a job after he retires from the MLS. as for "brats" there are prolyl more in the NFL and NBA then in soccer. the NFL is the richest sport in the world. they hand money out to rookies that dont even play (alex smith 49ers) so really they are more spoiled then soccer players.

The reason soccer is the most "played" sport, hence making it the most "popular" in your sense, is because with one ball, a bunch of poor blokes can play. That's why the majority of the world plays it,because THEY'RE POOR! It doesn't take any more equipment other than a ball and players on each side, as opposed to football (ball, pads, helmet, uni's etc). Unorganized football(neighborhood games) start kids on their path much the same way as soccer players with one ball and a group of kids. This still doesn't make soccer the most exciting sport just because the majority of the world plays it, but I do watch it when World Cup time comes around and cheer on the USA!

All the reporting being referenced in this thread doesn't go on the amount of people playing the sport. Rather they report on the amount of people following each sport.
